Keynote Presentation – Convergence or Conflict? The Structural Limits of Hybrid Advice

William Trout, Direct of the Securities and Investments practice at Datos Insights

The wealth management industry has made a staggering bet on hybrid advice—but what if the premise is only partially right, and the part that is wrong is costing firms clients, trust, and margin? This session confronts the central contradictions embedded in today's hybrid models: clients who demand lower fees on grounds of digital efficiency while expecting concierge service to remain unchanged, and investors who report strong digital preferences that reverse completely when markets turn. These are not edge cases. They are structural tensions that no amount of UX refinement will resolve. Drawing on new Datos Insights research across 800+ high-net-worth households, the presentation examines when hybrid advice builds trust and when it creates friction, which client segments thrive versus feel overlooked, which advisor behaviors separate successful implementations from failures, and why certain models become economically unsustainable regardless of execution quality. Attendees leave with a clear framework for where to focus, what to fix, and when segment-specific models are necessary—so they stop scaling service approaches that do not match what high-net-worth households actually value.

Tax Planning: The Growth Engine Hiding in Plain Sight

92% of clients want tax planning advice—but most firms still treat it as an afterthought. What if that gap isn’t just a missed service offering, but a structural limitation in how advice is delivered? This session examines how operating without real-time tax intelligence creates blind spots—limiting outcomes, obscuring held-away assets, and leaving compounding value on the table. Drawing on real-world implementation experience, we’ll explore how embedding tax data directly into the client relationship unlocks a more complete financial picture, strengthens trust, and expands planning opportunities across the wealth stack.
