Unclaimed property.

In complying with regulations enacted by the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec, SEI Investments Canada Company (“SEI Canada”) has implemented policies and procedures to locate investors for whom we are holding unclaimed property, if their last known address was in one of the provinces noted above.

Unclaimed property would include mutual fund units held in an account with us or uncashed cheques for distributions/dividends paid by a fund or proceeds on redemption of a fund.

Property greater than $50 would be deemed "unclaimed" if one of the following situations occur:

  • Communications to investors have been returned address unknown or incorrect addresses.
  • Three years have elapsed from the date on which last instructions were received from the client.
    • For funds held in registered accounts (RRSP, locked in RRSP, LIRA, etc.), the three-year period starts no later than December 31st in the year in which the untraceable client turns 71. Should the client die become deceased before their 71st birthday, property becomes unclaimed three years following the date of death.
    • For funds held in a registered education savings account (RESP), the three-year period starts on the date on which the untraceable client’s RESP expires.
