The SEI Difference
Michael and Pat's Story

The SEI Difference At Work
Michael had all the answers when it came to money and business. But when it came to his own wealth, he had no idea if he and Pat had enough.

Michael had perfected a certain symbiosis in his own soul, combining the instincts of a shrewd marketer with the intelligence of a brilliant researcher and manager. It was this powerful combination that led the small but publicly-held biotech company he managed to a major breakthrough that quadrupled the value of his stock options.

"We were concerned. We didn't know if we had enough."

Suddenly, Michael and his wife Pat’s dream of success had become real.

With years of complex analytical challenges behind him, Michael now had only one big question on his mind: how should he and Pat invest their money? Michael began interviewing investment professionals about the best way to structure his portfolio. It was that question that brought Pat and Michael to SEI.

“What do you recommend?” Michael asked. “I was thinking I should allocate a quarter in hedge funds, half in bonds and the rest in stocks, including mutual funds. But no start-ups,” he cautioned, “I don’t expect to get this lucky again.” While Michael had come to us for investment advice, we learned through our discovery process that his real concern was not where to invest his money, but whether he had enough. Enough to live on. Enough to build on. Enough to finally do the things he wanted to do. Michael had reached a great point in his life, yet he now felt more anxiety about money than ever before.

Our discussions with Michael and Pat revealed that while he wanted more time with his family, Pat had business aspirations of her own.

Michael wondered if there was enough money to satisfy all their goals, to create a business opportunity for Pat that would allow them to spend more time together and maintain their current lifestyle. With Michael and Pat’s approval, we developed a plan that allowed them to take their life in a more fulfilling direction.

The purchase of a bed and breakfast at a seaside resort was something both Michael and Pat once dreamed about. We helped make it a reality.

The bed and breakfast became a family business and part of a program Michael and Pat initiated through SEI. Soon Michael pointed his life in an entirely new direction when he realized how much he preferred flip-flops to his lab coat. With his future firmly established, he used his business experience to expand their bed and breakfast, which became their primary family residence.

"SEI helped us develop a plan that would satisfy our mutual and individual goals for our family."

Michael and Pat were finally secure in the knowledge they had leveraged their wealth in the most productive way possible to support the life they wanted

"My wife and I had big dreams, but we didn't know if we had enough to accomplish our goals. "
