Antiquated notions of front-, middle- and back-office are becoming obsolete as asset management functions converge. Data is a dominant force breaking down these silos — the aggregation and integration of intelligence is vital to decision-making, risk management and regulatory oversight. In this context, efficient data distribution is essential. An integrated operating platform will generate competitive strength across the firm.

With $7 trillion in play, the defined contribution market continues to grow, now an astounding 28% of total retirement assets — however, it is matched by heightened fiduciary and regulatory concerns. Alternatives Converge

In a survey of nearly 200 GPs worldwide, SEI discovers significant convergence between hedge funds and PE firms as they diversify and rethink service models. Seven out of 10 firms plan to offer customized investment vehicles, co-investment, separate accounts or other structures in the coming year. In addition, half of firms surveyed plan to direct more resources at reporting. These trends suggest that operating infrastructure will be put to the test. In today’s environment, investment performance is no longer the only driver of choice.

DC Innovation

DC investors have shifted significantly over the last decade toward greater portfolio diversification by using non-correlating asset classes and exposures to alternatives. We see the same forces in the DC market. In order to help participants meet their retirement goals and comply with new regulations, asset managers and plan sponsors are introducing unconventional structures to expand plan QDIAs and other choices. At the end of 2016, managed accounts were offered in 35% of plans, 65% of TDFs held REITS and 40% held commodity funds. What does the future hold?
