Poll Results: Managing Pensions Mid-Year 2012

Investment challenges and strategies with the greatest impact on pension management so far this year

Pension plan sponsors faced a challenging first half of 2012, with ongoing market volatility and record low interest rates. The Pension Management Research Panel conducted its 5th annual mid-year update poll to determine investment challenges and strategies, and their impact on pension management.

Key findings:

1. MAP-21 legislation could provide short-term funding relief

  • 43% said legislation would have an impact on contributions

2. LDI & Glidepath strategies remain popular

  • 52% invest a portion of the pension portfolio in LDI strategies
  • 40% have a glidepath strategy or are developing one

3. Pension plans remain an important benefit

  • 56% would not terminate if given the choice
